Sino all'anno 800 d.C. il lago era conosciuto col nome di Benacus e, sull'origine di tale nome, i pareri sono discordi. Per alcuni, questo nome deriverebbe dall'antichissima città Benacus che sorgeva presso Toscolano e sprofondò in seguito a terremoto. Altri invece lo fanno derivare da Nago o Naco, il contrafforte del Baldo che si trova nei pressi di Torbole ai piedi del Monte Peneo. L'attuale denominazione cominciò a comparire, e a mano a mano sostituirsi alla primitiva, dopo che Carlo Magno elevò a contea le terre di Garda: per l'importanza assunta, Garda ebbe giurisdizione su tutto il lago, specie fra il IX e l’XI secolo. Tuttavia, la denominazione Benacus sopravvisse a lungo, e tuttora resiste nella forma italiana Benàco.
